About YKMI

What is YotKom Missions International (YKMI)?

YotKom Missions International (YKMI) is a global health education organisation based in Gulu, Uganda. It runs international clinical elective programmes, humanitarian healthcare, university partnerships, research and community-based health education, with communities treated as partners in learning. Its flagship programme is Oral Health Uganda.

Where is YKMI based?

YKMI is based in Gulu, in northern Uganda. Its programmes work with hospitals, health centres, schools, mobile outreach clinics and rural and peri-urban communities in Uganda.

What is Oral Health Uganda?

Oral Health Uganda (OHU) is YKMI’s flagship dental outreach programme. It runs mobile dental clinics for rural and peri-urban communities and school-based oral health screening and education, and it is a supervised training ground for visiting clinical elective students. OHU is where YKMI’s community partnership model was first tested.

What are YKMI’s five pillars?

YKMI works through five connected pillars: international clinical elective programmes, humanitarian healthcare, university partnerships, research and innovation, and community partnership. Community partnership runs through all of the others.

What are YKMI’s guiding principles?

YKMI’s six guiding principles set what comes first when priorities compete: education before activity, partnership before presence, patients before programmes, humility before expertise, quality before growth, and impact before numbers.

What makes YKMI different?

YKMI designs programmes with communities and universities rather than delivering them to communities. Visiting and local professionals work side by side under one clinical structure, every clinical activity is supervised to the same standard, and YKMI prioritises long-term partnership over short-term interventions.
